Post-covid anxiety is a type of anxiety that can develop after exposure to the virus. It is characterised by feelings of worry, nervousness and fear. These symptoms can be triggered by events or thoughts related to the virus, such as hearing about someone who has become seriously ill with Covid-19.


For some, post-covid anxiety is triggered at the prospect of being in large groups, and even when in a situation where they may be around others who are infected. This can lead to feelings of paranoia and an overall sense of unease. It is important to remember that post-covid anxiety is a very real phenomenon and that there are ways to manage it.


For some people, post-covid anxiety may also cause physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, it can lead to panic attacks.

It is completely natural to feel this way. Everyone adapts differently to change, some quicker than others. It can be easy to dismiss post-covid anxiety as others around us may seem comfortable in returning to 'normal' life, as it was prior to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, as awareness of the spreading of disease has increased over previous years, it is natural for us to feel uneasy and cautious when emerging from the pandemic.

Prioritise Sleep and Relaxation

It is important that if you are suffering from post-covid anxiety, you take the time to relax and get a good night's sleep. This means setting aside time for yourself, turning off all electronic devices and winding down before bed. Try not to drink caffeine or alcohol in the evening, as they can both interfere with sleep. It is important to take the time to relax and rest your mind and body. As we become more relaxed, our anxiety lowers. Whilst this does not remove the issues we face, it does help us to gather our thoughts and address our worries.


Practice Mindfulness

When you are feeling anxious, it is easy to get caught up in negative thoughts. However, it is important to be mindful of how these thoughts are impacting your day-to-day life. If they are causing you distress, try to challenge them and replace them with more positive ones. Meditation, yoga and mindfulness are also very good ways of training your mind to be calmer and reducing your anxiety levels. All of these practices help you to focus on the present moment and not get caught up in negative thoughts or worries. Talk to Someone

As we all look at things differently, a friend or a therapist may be able to help you view your anxieties in new ways and allow you to understand why you feel a certain way, and how you can overcome it.


Furthermore, venting to someone is a great way to relieve stress and tension. As it helps us to relax, we can then take time to focus on ourselves and find the roof of our anxiety.


Embrace Positive Change

The pandemic has forced us all to change the way we live our lives, and for many of us, these changes have been positive. We have had more time to focus on our health and wellbeing, to reconnect with friends and family and pursue our hobbies. It is important to embrace these positive changes in our lives as they can help us to overcome post-covid anxiety.


As we return to 'normal life' it is possible that we can view this as a negative change. However, it is important to consider our mindset and how that may affect our viewpoints on change. By embracing change and looking for opportunities for self-growth and enjoyment, we can begin to ease ourselves into a post-covid world and find our place.


Do Not Rush Yourself

Look, we all react to things differently. And post-covid anxiety is no different. It is important to not put any pressure on yourself to 'get over it' or 'snap out of it'. This will only make you feel worse about yourself and your situation. Instead, take things at your own pace, and focus on taking small steps each day.


We live in a fast-paced world where we are constantly being bombarded with new information. And whilst this can be overwhelming, it is important to remember that you do not have to consume everything at once. Just because someone says that you should be doing something, does not mean that you have to do it. Listen to your body and your mind, and do what feels right for you
